Utilities generate up to an estimated $12.4 billion in the sale of wholesale and retail communications services, according to UTC’s latest research report Utility Telecom Services: A Comprehensive Analysis of Communications Services Offered by Utilities. Based on a survey of its utility members, the analysis shows that over two-thirds, or around 2,226 utilities, sell some form of communications service to homes and businesses in their service areas.
Even with minimal marketing and sales initiatives, utilities generate from $6.1 billion to $12.4 billion annually through the sale of these services, according to UTC’s estimates. The bulk of this revenue flows from the sale of wholesale communications services to businesses, accounting for $4.5 to $8.1 billion of the total communications service revenues generated by the industry.
Among some of the study’s specific findings:
• Leasing of dark fiber is the most frequently offered wholesale communications service offered by utilities, with an estimated 39% of utilities offering dark fiber.
• Wireless collocation service, however, is the top revenue generator among wholesale options, accounting for $2.5 billion to $3.1 billion per year in industry-wide revenue.
• In terms of retail communications options, high-speed data service is the single most frequently cited offering, with 19% of utilities offering this service.
• Even though high-speed data service is more frequently offered, the single biggest retail service revenue generator for utilities is multichannel video service, which accounts for around $850 million to $1.26 billion in U.S. utility revenue annually.
