Utilities Expanding Focus on Smart Grid Technical Standards and Spectrum Issues Support by UTC Staff Changes

Washington, D.C. – The Utilities Telecom Council has created two new positions to meet its member utilities’ expanding focus on smart grid technical standards and spectrum issues and has assigned to two senior executives to lead these key efforts:

  • Klaus Bender has been named Director of Standards and Engineering. He will become UTC’s full-time representative with key smart grid interoperability technical standards activities including those currently underway at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Open Smart Grid Group (Open SG), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In this assignment, he will monitor and analyze new standards activities impacting smart grid interoperability and cybersecurity. Additionally, he will become a resource for UTC utility and technology partner members in helping them understand how these activities will impact their business. Prior to this appointment, Bender had been UTC’s Director of RF Engineering.
  • Donald Vasek has been named Director of Spectrum Services. He will be responsible for the full-time management of UTC’s spectrum services, including frequency coordination services and spectrum license management services. Vasek comes to UTC from the Enterprise Wireless Association where he had served as the Executive Director, Spectrum Operations, as well as the Secretary of the Land Mobile Communications Council (LMCC). He has over 30 years of experience in the frequency coordination environment with previous positions at Personal Communications Industry Association (PCIA) and National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER) prior to its merger with PCIA.

In making the appointments, UTC President and Chief Executive Officer William R. Moroney said, “These two individuals bring an unparalleled level of experience to these two important positions at this critical time.” He added, “We are very fortunate to have Don joining the UTC team and Klaus able to take on this new assignment.”
