Also, UTC has once again teamed with KEMA, Inc. to publish Smart Grids, A Strategic Technology Roadmap, a report intended to offer practical guidance to help utilities plot a course through the complex business and technology issues involved in next-generation infrastructure investments.

Upcoming Regional Meetings

Several UTC regions have educational events planned for this fall. Regional meetings provide a great way for you to learn and network with other utilities in your same geographic area that are often facing the same issues as your utility. UTC understands that it might be difficult to justify travel with the sluggish economy; however, these regional events provide a great way for you to gain education that benefits your company without undergoing the high cost of traveling to a far away location. Don't wait any longer to register! Email meetings@utc.org if you need more information about any of these events.

Plan Now to Exhibit or Sponsor a UTC Event

Start planning your involvement in UTC's regional meetings for 2008 and 2009, as well as exhibit and sponsorship opportunities at UTC EXPO 2009. UTC offers opportunities at every price point and can work with you to customize a package that fits your specific needs. Interested? Contact Cheryl Stratos, UTC Sales at cheryl.stratos@utc.org or call 703.212.4960. Don't wait until it's too late, since the exhibit space or sponsorship that you want could get sold.

Take Advantage of the Opportunities Offered by the UtiliSite Council

UtiliSite, a "one-stop shop" for utility collocation opportunities, is an organization of utilities that offers a wide variety of support services for commercial wireless carriers, including antenna sitings, traffic backhaul and construction. We are a reliable source for information on the best way to work with carriers, template contracts and marketing of collocation opportunities. Your real estate is appealing to wireless carriers, and the Council can get your real-estate and collocation staff up to speed much quicker than it would take to grow your business alone. Visit us online at www.utilisite.org to find out more about the Council. For more information on membership, contact Kristy Weinshel, Director of Membership, at 202.833.6815 or kristy.weinshel@utc.org.

UPLC/UTC Hosted BPL Standards Update Call

UPLC, an active voter on the IEEE standards update, hosted a call on August 27th for members of UPLC and UTC to discuss the current status of P1901 MAC/PHY Standards, P117 Emissions Standard and P1675 Installation/Hardware Standard. The standards are all relevant for utilities and technology providers that service the utility market. The call urged utilities to get more involved in the process to ensure that standardization promotes Access BPL, particularly in the case of P1901. If you are interested in participating, please note that you would need to attend two meetings in order to be eligible to vote at the third meeting. P1901 deals with the compatibility and interoperability of Access and In-Home systems. Key issues under debate include symbol length and cyclic prefix, although frequency division/common MAC and more detailed specification for in-home are important. This is particularly important to utilities because if the standards do not support access BPL systems, it will drive up costs and preclude interoperability. The P1775 Emissions Standards and P1675 Installation/Hardware Standards also need more utility support as both deal with standards on how the BPL technology actually works and gets installed. Both standards are still in draft mode, but a final vote on the P1775 and P1675 standards is expected soon.

UPLC will continue to push for standards that benefit utilities and their service providers. There will be another vote at the next meeting of the P1901 Working Group scheduled for September 29-October 2, 2008 in Madrid, Spain which UPLC plans to attend and another discussion at UPLC's Annual Conference, Broadband Power Line 2008 scheduled for September 10-12, 2008 in Houston, TX. For more information on the standards, please contact the UPLC Legal/Regulatory Department.

Make Sure Your Contact Details in the Membership Directory Are Up-To-Date

One of the benefits of UTC Membership is access to the UTC Membership Directory. We encourage ALL MEMBERS to log into the UTC Membership Directory and make sure their details are up-to-date. To update your entry, email your contact information to marketing@utc.org.

Get Involved with UTC in the New Membership Year!

There are plenty of ways to get involved with UTC! UTC's Divisions and Committees provide a forum in which our members can network with their peers on specific issues that interest them. In 2008-2009, the Divisions and Committees have a wide variety of issues they are working on and are looking for volunteers for as little or as much time as you have available to help. If you are interested in volunteering for a Division or Committee, or finding out more about their initiatives, please contact Karnel Thomas, Vice President- Member Services, at 202.833.6816 or karnel.thomas@utc.org.

Share Your Technology RFP!

UTC's Technical Division is calling on all member (or non-member) energy and water companies to share their RFPs. In particular, we are looking for statements of work, performance objectives and timeline sections of technology/application based RFPs that utilities have issued. The actual organization name will not be included. This is just a way to share best practices for other members looking to issue RFPs to gauge how others have crafted these segments. You can send your RFP to marketing@utc.org. A member section of the UTC Web site will be created to store these RFPs and will only be accessible to UTC members.

Get "Linked In" To UTC

Are you a member of Linked In? If so, the Utilities Telecom Council now has a group available as MEMBER BENEFIT.
