Jeff Katz assumes role as Chairman of the UTC Board of Directors

As the new membership year begins, UTC's Board of Directors' new leadership is taking the helm. Jeff Katz, Enterprise IT Consultant at PSEG Services Corporation is the new Chairman of the Board. With a focus of, "heighten[ing] awareness among utility executives about why UTC membership is so important to their companies," the new Chairman has created a modern comments box. He asks that you share with your executives how UTC or another UTC member helped you in your job, helped save your company money, or helped your company implement a best practice. A new email address has been created where you can send these success stories and for comments in general - chair@utc.org. Feel free to give us your suggestions, wish lists for UTC involvement, questions, and even complaints. Emails will go directly to Mr. Katz, UTC CEO Bill Moroney, and to the Member Services Staff at UTC.

What's New for UTC Canada

In September, UTC Canada hosted a very successful annual conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia that attracted telecom and IT professionals in Canadian energy and water organizations as well as leading vendor partners that sell to this market. If you were able to attend, we thank you again for making this conference a success.

Next on the agenda for UTC Canada is membership renewal and recruitment. Current members should expect to see renewal notices soon. If you have any questions about membership in the meantime, please contact UTC Member Services or at 202.872.0030.

Start UTC's New Membership Year Off Right - Volunteer!

As UTC starts its new membership year, we once again make the call for volunteers. Research has shown us that actively involved members get more out of the organization both professionally and personally. The great thing about volunteering with UTC is that you can let your schedule dictate how involved you are in each project. We understand that the economy has forced many members to do more with less, but that's exactly why volunteering in UTC is such a great idea. You can work on issues that will supplement work related projects, which can be a huge benefit to both you and your organization. Contact Karnel Thomas, VP-Member Services, at karnel.thomas@utc.org or 202.833.6816 to find out more.

Work Objectives Outlined by UTC Business Development Division

The UTC Business Development Division has outlined 2009-2010 work objectives and are encouraging all interested members to get engaged with the division. Ben Easterling, Business Development Manager, Southern Telecom, Inc. and Chairman of the UTC Business Development Division is looking to core utility members and utility telecom industry technology partners to work along with him in the upcoming membership year. The division will focus on the following areas:

    • Developing a business case to permit licensees in the 900 MHz band to lease additional capacity on a for-profit basis to other eligible band users.
    • Developing strategies to leverage AMI infrastructures being deployed by utilities to provide additional meter reading services for other electric, water and gas utilities.
    • Identify opportunities to leverage existing assets for greater utilization to benefit the shareholder while servicing our customers.

If you or a colleague are interested in working on one or all of these topics, please contact Karnel Thomas, UTC VP Member Services, at karnel.thomas@utc.org or 202.833.6816 to learn more about the upcoming plans of the UTC Business Development Division.

How Does Your Utility Use Social Media? Tell UTC!

As the use of Facebook and Twitter expands to hundreds of millions of users around the globe, opportunities abound for utilities to take advantage of these easy, user-friendly technologies that enable knowledge-sharing and increased productivity. How is your utility taking advantage of online social networking? Are you building an internal communications plan that includes the use of social media applications like blogs, wikis etc.? If so, UTC Research wants to hear from you for its latest white paper research report that explores the use of new social networking applications and how utilities are using these tools to communicate better with customers, regulators and business colleagues. Please contact Neha Shah with comments and input at neha.shah@utc.org or at 202-833-6805.

UTC Hosts Joint Use Workshop 2009

Utilities are facing an entirely new pole attachment world than they did just six months ago. Even with the downturn of the economy, there is still a wave of new attachments for smart grid and broadband that could be a pole tsunami. Given this state, utilities need to do more with less at a time when there is increasing concern about critical infrastructure. UTC's Joint Use Workshop 2009 will assess the current state of pole attachments, examine the business and technology changes ahead, and suggest policies that will help restore balance to pole attachment regulation. Early registration ends this Friday - Save $100 by registering by this date! For more information, please visit Joint Use Workshop 2009. If you have any questions about this Workshop, please email registration@utc.org or call UTC at 202.872.0030.
