Utility Telecom Spending Up 13% in 2009 UTC Study Finds

Utilities plan to spend around $2.6 billion on telecommunications equipment and services in 2009, a level of spending that represents a 13% increase over 2008 utility telecom-related expenditures, according to preliminary results from UTC's Utilities Telecommunications Forecast Study. Slated for release in late-June, this comprehensive analysis is based on a survey of UTC members conducted in April and May 2009 and presents detailed financial data on the kinds of telecom equipment and services utilities are buying, how utilities rate their vendors and how spending is expected to change next year and over the coming five years, among other key topics. Based on the survey results, spending on "smart grid" technologies should reach $569 million in 2009, a baseline level of spending that could dramatically escalate over the coming two years given the influx of billions of dollars in smart grid stimulus funding. These and other findings were presented during a pre-conference tutorial at UTC TELECOM 2009. Redline Communications (Gold Sponsor) and Granger Telecom (Bronze Sponsor) are generous supporters of the study. Sponsorships are still available for companies looking to maximize their visibility through this high-profile research. Contact Cheryl Stratos at 703.212.4968.

Smart Networks Council Hosts Key Meetings at UTC TELECOM 2009

The Smart Networks Council (SNC), an operating unit within UTC formed to provide leadership for members' efforts to build next-generation utilities, held two important meetings at UTC TELECOM 2009. The first was an open meeting of the Council to which both UTC members and non-members were invited. During the meeting, attendees received updates of regulatory, legislative and administrative activities that impact the development of smart grids. Attendees were also briefed on the work of SNC Security and Education and Research Committees as well as the efforts by an SNC "Network of Networks" work group. The SNC Board of Directors also met during the conference to develop the Council's strategy, identify information goals and hammer out action items. The SNC invites the active participation of UTC members. To become involved in the SNC or for more information, please visit http://www.smartnetworkscouncil.org/. or contact Cynthia Brumfield at 202.833.6828.
