Now is the BEST Time to Join UTC

Are you a non-member that gets this email? It must mean that you are in some way connected to the utility telecom community. Now is the time to consider joining UTC, so you get a full year PLUS of membership. There are benefits for both utility members and vendor partners that are worth multiples of the actual membership fee. Only UTC serves as "the voice of critical infrastructure communications" representing energy and water utilities and their vendor partners on areas of interest such as spectrum allocation, pole attachment/joint use, cybersecurity, smart grid/smart energy networks, standards and more. To find out how you can start taking advantage of membership, please contact Kristy Weinshel, Director of Membership at 202.833.6815.

Core Utility Members Urged to Answer UTC's Communications Needs Survey

UTC is conducting a study of the communications and information technology requirements of our nation's utilities. The first-of-its-kind study will identify and articulate the unique requirements of the utility industry to ensure safe, reliable and cost-effective 21st century energy grids.

This multi-part analysis includes a survey that asks our core utility members to answer important questions on what you need in terms of latency, reliability, security and technology options in order to run your communications networks in the best possible way. We plan to send our core members an email asking you to complete the survey by August 31. Please contact UTC's Research Department at 202.833.6806 or email us at research@utc.org if you have any questions about the survey in advance.

This study is an important and high-profile effort that will provide enormous benefits to the utility industry. We urge you to participate.

Utilities Generate Up to $12 Billion in Sale of Communications Services UTC Study Finds

Utilities generate up to an estimated $12.4 billion in the sale of wholesale and retail communications services according to UTC's latest research report Utility Telecom Services: A Comprehensive Analysis of Communications Services Offered by Utilities. Based on a survey of utility members, the analysis shows that over two-thirds, or around 2,226 utilities, sell some form of communications service to homes and businesses in their service areas.

Even with minimal marketing and sales initiatives, utilities generate from $6.1 billion to $12.4 billion annually through the sale of these services, according to UTCs estimates. The bulk of this revenue flows from the sale of wholesale communications services to businesses, accounting for $4.5 to $8.1 billion of the total communications service revenues generated by the industry.

The study offers detailed data on a wide range of telecom services offered by utilities, from wireless collocation to competitive broadband services, along with a directory of utilities offering these services. Download a table of contents or order your report here. The report is free to core utility members and available for sale to associate and non-members. Call UTC's Research Department at 202.833.6806 or email us at research@utc.org with any questions.
