The purpose of this report is to provide guidelines, background information, and ideas for an electric utility to define its own ‘Smart Grid Vision’ and ‘Smart Grid Strategic Technology Roadmap’ that will pave the way towards implementing a Smart Grid that supports the utility’s long-term objectives. UTC Research goes beyond simply defining a Smart Grid, and looks into questions like the reasons for needing a Smart Grid and what makes a grid ‘smart’. This report addresses the complexity of this overall concept that involves all aspects of electric power supply, from generation to end-user load.
