In a recent announcement, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has published ten CIP standards (CIP-002-5 through CIP-009-5, CIP-010-1, and CIP-011-1), a set of new and revised NERC Glossary definitions, and a proposed implementation plan.

As the energy industry moves forward in the development and deployment of smart energy grids, marketing ploys that misrepresent utility capabilities and needs have been implemented that are designed to skew both utility decisions and regulatory oversight. The marketing ploys ignore the fact that utilities will ultimately choose to build their own networks or buy telecom services based upon technical requirements, costs and levels of service required.

UTC Files Joint Comments on FCC's Cybersecurity Roadmap Proceeding

UTC, EEI, APPA and NRECA filed joint comments with the FCC in its proceeding on the development of a cybersecurity roadmap (PS Docket No. 10-146). The Associations emphasized three main points: urging the FCC to support smart grid and existing private communications networks, suggesting that the FCC coordinate with other agencies in developing the roadmap, and urging the FCC to recognize existing international standards on cybersecurity.
