How can utilities ensure that they are deriving the expected value out of their network infrastructure investments? How can the complexities of managing both new and existing technologies be reduced, especially in a time when major changes to the composition of the workforce are anticipated? Utilities are migrating to new networking technologies such as MPLS, packet radio, and next-generation optical in order to better achieve their business goals through information sharing and automation. Initiatives such as Smart Grid, AMI and IP video surveillance are driving new requirements for network performance and reliability. These modern applications promise to deliver more efficient and effective means of providing electric services. But without intelligent management, visibility and control of the underlying network technology, it is unlikely that the anticipated improvements will be fully realized.
